32nd Color and Imaging Conference

Display Simulation Pipeline for Augmented Reality (AR)

W3

Tuesday October 29, 15:45 – 18:30

Convener: Christopher Reidy, Meta Platforms, Inc.

Description
This workshop covers simulation of an augmented reality display. Beginning from GPU and rendering, we look at practical considerations of display pipeline architecture, color processing, pipeline bit-depth, and display panel simulation. We also cover display projector simulation, including sub-pixel layout, pixel shape/fill factor, modulation transfer function (MTF), and contrast modeling. We further add simulations of display see-through optics, including the accurate simulation of contrast, dimming, and MTF.  The simulations are presented on a high resolution, high luminance reference monitor, which completes the end-to-end model of an AR display with physically accurate ambient lighting.

NOTE: This is a hands-on workshop with Matlab code. Attendees are expected to bring their own laptop loaded with Matlab or Matlab Runtime and an image processing toolbox.

Dr. Christopher Reidy has 8 years of experience at Microsoft, Apple, and Meta, where his work has been centered on augmented reality display design, simulation, and pipeline architecture.
