32nd Color and Imaging Conference

Color Pipeline for VFX and Movie Production

W2

Tuesday October 29, 15:45 – 18:30

Conveners: Jérémie Gerhardt, consultant color scientist/ex-DNEG, and Christian Ganea Reitmeier, DNEG

Description
This workshop focuses on the color pipeline for VFX and movie production and the key roles of those who touch images in the process of producing VFX and making movies. During the process, images are passed through specialized departments until final delivery to the audience. At each step, images submitted by a client are worked and transformed by artists while preserving the intended look the client desires. During this workshop, a color scientist presents his role regarding color management, how it is setup, and his role in helping various artists/departments in the VFX processes. A colorist from a VFX studio presents his work, the collaboration with the artists/supervisors and also the differences with the DI/finishing colorists from the main DI/production house. Supervisors from VFX, lighting, and compositor present their roles and work in relation to color. Each software they use is connected to the color pipeline and should be able to interact seamlessly. The VFX production is complex, and discussion between each specialist/artist are vital for delivering images to the client and preserving the best image quality throughout the whole process.
